The original film concentrated on the energy locked in fossil fuels, as a primer for the Primeval Diorama to follow. It traced the energy in fossil fuels back back to prehistoric sunlight, falling upon the Earth's forests. Ellen's Energy Adventure goes much, much farther back--all the way to the "Big Bang," tracing all energy to the creation of the Universe itself. Ellen and Bill Nye later make their way to the age of the dinosaur, just in time to witness the creation of fossil fuels.
